Writing to Shape History

Assignment Description: For this assignment, you will change history. Using writing, you will create a course proposal for the addition of a new primary source document to Dr. Wooster’s US History until 1865 reading list. Your writing will be evaluated by Learning Community faculty, and based on our shared conclusions, we will include your source in the History reading list for Spring 2019. This assignment grade will be your first integrated assignment in the Learning Community. As such, all LC instructors will assist you in completing this document and share the resulting grade. For additional information, please reach out to your LC faculty.

Important Dates:

Soft Deadline: Submission to Blackboard on Sunday, September 30th at 11:59 PM.

Hard Deadline: Submission to Blackboard as part of the Writing and Rhetoric Midterm Portfolio on Friday, October 12th at 11:59 PM.

Things to Consider:

  • Primary Source Selection:

    • What existing documents and excerpts might you reference for guidance on selecting your own source?

    • Do you possess or have access to the expertise necessary to navigate your source?

    • What must you do in order to develop an understanding of the historical context surrounding this source?

    • Your chosen document must be in English.

  • Proposal Formatting:

    • Have you reviewed and followed the template provided?

    • Does your document successfully incorporate research to demonstrate your own logical thought process?

    • Is your document single-spaced, size 12, Times New Roman font?

    • Is your document a minimum of 2 pages in length?

    • Have you included accurate APA in-text citations and a References page

Primary Source Overview:

[For this section of the document, you will use writing to provide a general overview of the selected primary source, the situation in which it was produced, and some biographical information about the author. Outside research will be necessary to complete this section, so please remember to cite all paraphrases, summaries, and direct quotes in correct APA (?) format. ]

Historical Significance:

[When you consider the purpose of this assignment, you should also understand the needs of your audience. In order for your proposal to be accepted, it must “fit” within the existing framework established by Dr. Wooster’s existing readings and lectures. Where would this source fit? Review his syllabus for additional guidance. Is this source “new” to the list or is it “replacing” another source? What purpose would including this source serve? How might it impact/correspond with other existing sources/lecture material? Include specific conversation that demonstrates your own understanding of the 1301 materials in order to connect your proposed document to the existing LC E framework. ]

Justification:

[ Why should we care? Dr. Wooster has spent the first few weeks of the semester attempting to establish a connection between historical events and your own daily lives. It is your turn. Why should the LC E faculty consider your proposed change? Why should current HIST 1301 students read this source? What modern day events that impacted your choice?]
