Reading Discussion

Create a document in your Engagement and Learning folder titled "Reading Discussion Notes" - you can choose to have one group member take notes and share it with the rest of the group.

On the Google running document for reading discussions, write notes for our discussion. For more information on threshold concepts, click here.  Be sure to use pick out at least one key quotation from your section...

In your groups, assign the following roles:

  • speaker

  • writer

  • researcher

  • support

Discuss the following:

  • Group A: Preface â€‹

  • Group B: Last paragraph on page 2

  • Group C: Metaconcept (pg. 15)

  • Group D: Metaconcept (pg. 16)

  • Group E: How do the readings support or connect? (synthesize)

Make sure to take notes for our class discussion. Pick a speaker for your group to discuss what your group talked about and the specific areas in the text. However, I will call randomly on people!

Discuss your process/approach to completing the readings assigned on Monday

  • How much time did you devote to the reading?

  • Did you make any notes or highlights? Did you have to look anything up?

  • What from the reading stuck out to you as important or difficult?

Did your group members struggle with the same portions of the reading?

Can you think of examples or situations in your life that relate to what you read in the Metaconcept?

Have every member of your group share a good or bad experience related to writing. What do these experiences have in common? What’s different about them?

Syllabus/Assignments Discussion

What questions do you have over our course information, course website, or assignment descriptions?

Introductory Letter Work

Throughout the course, you will be engaged in different forms of reflective writing. As entering University as a First Year student is a big life transition, it’s a great time to think about where (and who) you are in life, where you came from, and where you want to go. Each of you will create an Introductory Letter to help you think about those questions, as well as to help you become accustomed to sharing the kind of information about yourself that people want to know or expect in certain situations. This can help you apply for future scholarships, fellowships, programs, jobs, etc.

For today, create a document in your “Engagement and Learning” folder labeled “Introductory Letter” and start trying to answer the following questions listed in the assignment description for the Introductory Letter.

Homework:

From Naming What We Know, please read:

  • Threshold Concept 1.0

From Framework for Information Literacy, read the Introduction

Start your Introductory Letter - see descriptions of assignments under Engagement and Learning for more information.
