Course Information

We will use Blackboard in a somewhat limited way for this class. Our class syllabus can be found on Blackboard.

More often, we will refer to our class webpage for course information. You can find a direct link to our class webpage on Blackboard, as well as on the syllabus. I recommend bookmarking for easy access.

Online Folders

In order to keep track of your work, as well as facilitate sharing of your work with your peers and professor, you will create an online folder of online documents to organize your work. Please use either GoogleDrive (you can get a free Gmail account to access if you do not already have one) or OneDrive (A Microsoft product built into the school web services architecture)

  • Create a folder called “ENGL 1302 - LASTNAME”

    • Create subfolders within that folder:

      • Engagement and Learning

      • Discovery Log

      • Midterm Portfolio

      • Situation/Genre Intersections Project

      • Final Portfolio

Introductions! & Activity

We are going to separate you into five groups.

Step 1: Within your group, use writing to create a list of five questions that you would want to be asked when introducing yourself.

Step 2: Exchange your list with the group to the left of yours

Step 3: Have everyone in your group answer the questions in a document you create called “About Me” in your “Warm Ups and Daily Work” folder

Step 4: Each class member will share their answers with the class.

Step 5: Let’s talk about it!

Questions to consider:

Why did your group choose the questions that you chose? Why did you want to know that information?

What are some similarities/differences between the questions your group wrote and the questions your group answered?
After learning more about your classmates and hearing the answers to the questions you wrote, how would you change your list of questions? Is your curiosity satisfied?

Homework:

From Naming What We Know, please read:

  • Preface: First two paragraphs, pages ix-x

  • Last paragraph on page 2, “Threshold concepts are…”

  • Metaconcept, pages 15-16

From Framework for Information Literacy, read the Introduction

Additionally, please read over the syllabus and explore our class webpage. Bring your questions over these course documents to class on Wednesday. I will also ask you some questions over both.
